Further Investigation
1. Here are silhouettes of a black-footed albatross and a F/A-18 fighter jet. From what you've seen in this activity, what conclusions can you come to about how each set of wings are used?
2. Three additional X-rays are provided for further exploration. These images can be viewed by selecting a second stack, ExploreAHStk.gif, in the pull-down menu adjacent to the Select Image Stack label. The first image shows a Muscovy duck and the other two are X-rays of a penguin (top and bottom). The duck's leg bones are solid, but the wing bones are hollow. Can you think of a reason for this difference? Look at the penguin's upper "hand": Is it solid or hollow? Why? (Hint: Penguins are flightless birds that use their wings in diving.)
