Studying events that happen quickly has always been challenging, especially before motion picture cameras were invented. In the late 1800s, Eadweard Muybridge began using a series of cameras, activated in sequence, to record motion on film. The individual pictures could then be viewed as a flip-book "movie."
Race Horse Bet
At one point, two men at a race track bet a large sum of money on whether a galloping race horse had at least one foot on the ground at all times. To settle this argument, Muybridge set up a row of twenty cameras, each triggered by the running horse, to capture the motion of the horse's legs.
