Even though this rove beetle habits may seem unappealing (it hangs out around dead animals and other decaying material), it's actually a very useful insect. Rove beetles are usually found in soil or rotting plants where they prey on small insects, maggots, and other larvae.

Rove beetles make up a HUGE family called Staphylinidae ("staff-eh-LIN-eh-dee") that includes 26,000 different species: Florida alone has 600 species of rove beetles. Members of this family represent 3 percent of all animals!

Golfers find this little creature annoying because it burrows underground, leaving behind mounds of dirt that can ruin that perfect putt.
